Format based on Tool 7.1 from Examining What We Do to Improve Our Schools
(Harris, Edmonson, and Combs, 2010)
Maybe I should have added a key at the bottom to explain SRI and ISIP for those who are unfamiliar with them. SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) is the reading assessment test given to students to determine if they qualify for the program and for those who do qualify they are assessed again at the middle and end of the year. ISIP (IStation Indicators of Progress) is the universal screener we use for RTI in grades K-6.

ReplyDeleteYour looks like it is taking some good shape. There isn't a lot of detail as to what you are asking, survey questions, etc, but you look to be out to collect a TON of data. What is your end goal? Do you have a perceived outcome in mind, or maybe a plan of attack as to where you might be taking your research? Do you have a team of folks that you are working with? Overall I like what you have done here. You are well on your way to a great inquiry.
Thanks Daniel. I appreciate your comments and questions. While I think I have everything well thought out, you are making me continue to rethink my plan. I didn't explain in detail because it was too much to put into the template. Maybe I should add more details.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very organized plan! You already thought of adding a key for the programs. We don't have Read 180 on our campus, but it is used in our district. I did a quick search on it. I was wondering if you would be reviewing Scholastic's data on this program? It would be interesting to see what results they are reporting and compare them to what you find.

DeleteI have no experience with Read 180, but as a 5th grade teacher I am interested in your results. You will be collecting a lot of data and I think organizing an action research notebook in advance is a great idea. Having more than one piece of data to show progress is wise. I would love to know what you are including in your reading survey. Is your school district going to purchase Istation this year, and did you feel it was successful last year? You have a great start on your plan and it is a living document, so add and subtract as needed.
ReplyDeleteHi Tammy! I will be creating the reading survey soon. I'll be happy to share it with you if you like. Our school is purchasing IStation for grades PreK-2 again this year. Texas Success provides it free for grades 3-8, and we will be using it in those grade levels as well. So far we are very happy with it and think it is helping our students. The only problem I have found so far is when taking ISIP some students play around on the computer instead of really trying. I think it's very important to monitor students, especially when they are taking the ISIP. The majority of students really like it because it is so interactive. The animation is outstanding and really holds their attention. Thanks for your comments.
DeleteWhat is read 180, could you share a little bit about it. Right now our school uses Leveled Literacy Intervention and Lexia. I am wondering what this is. Maybe our school could benefit from it. DOes it collect data? Overall your plan is very organized and looks great! :-D
ReplyDeleteHi Brittani! Read 180 is a research based intervention program. The lessons include a lot of science and social studies. It is very engaging. The class begins and ends with a whole group lesson. In between whole groups there are three rotations-small group, modeled and independent reading, and computer instruction. The first thing I noticed when I visited the classroom was students really enjoying reading. There were students in the class who have struggled for years (since K) and hated reading, but they were participating and excited. It was awesome! Though we don't know how much of an affect it will have on STAAR scores yet, getting these students to enjoy reading is a great achievement in itself. I think that makes it worth all the money in the world. I also have to add that we have an outstanding Read 180 teacher and give her credit for making it work so well.
DeleteOh, and yes, it generates a lot of data. There is also a writing component that we are finding quite useful in helping students learn how to write. Can't say enough good about it. I can't imagine it not improving scores.
